You can't visit the Scottish Highlands and Islands during the summer months and not spend at least an hour on a beach. One of the biggest discoveries I made when I first moved to the Scottish Highlands was how many incredible beaches there are dotted about all over the coastline here. I really didn't like spending time of beaches before moving here, but now I love exploring the beautiful beaches around these part of the world.
I first visited Sandaig Beach near Glenelg five years, just after I first moved to the Scottish Highlands. Visiting Sandaig Beach then really help to kickstart a love affair with this beautiful peninsula, which I reguarly visit and always recommend to family and friends who are up visiting us in Lochalsh. That first visit to Sandaig was also the first time I tried wild swimming in the Scottish Highlands, a hobby that I have really grown to love over the last five years.
Sandaig Beach is probably most well known for being the home of "Camusfearna"from Gavin Maxwell's book Ring of Bright Water. Even though it's been well over 50 years since Gavin Maxwell wrote his famous books here, there are still remnants of the life he lived here. The Ring of Bright Water is on my list of books to read set in the Scottish Highlands and Islands and, having now visited Sandaig Beach, I can really visualise how this beautiful spot inspired his writings.
Sandiag is a fantastic little cove beach with views over to the Sleat Peninsula on the Isle of Skye. It's a great beach for exploring and there are plenty of rocks and pools to discover new things in. I love bringing a picnic down for a lunch by the sea and it makes for a fantastic spot for watching the world go by.
Some Tips
The walk down to Sandaig Beach is not for the faint of heart. It takes about 20 minutes to walk down and the walk back up is pretty steep. Please bear this in mind if you are planning on visiting, especially if you have anyone in your group with mobility issues or any young children with you
There are no toilets in the vicinity of this beach. If you in need of a loo nearby, your best option is visiting the toilets at Glenelg Village Hall (about a 15 drive away)
If you're looking for somewhere to pick up supplies before heading down to the beach, make sure to check out the Glenelg Shop (possibly one of the cutest village shops in the Scottish Highlands) for all your supplies. They are open six days a week and you can find out more information about what they stock and opening hours by checking out their website here.
