What's June Really like in the Scottish Highlands

June evening in the Scottish Highlands

June truly is the start of summer here in the Scottish Highlands.

One of my favourite things about this month here is just how green everything is here. With the amount of rain we get here in the Scottish Highlands, coupled with the sunshine we normally get here in April and May, the hills and mountains really pop at this time of year. If you're visiting at this time of year, make sure to check out the green mountains. You won't regret spotting the incredible colours at this time of year.

In terms of weather, June often ends up being pretty mixed month. Sometimes we get lovely sunny weather. Sometimes it rains for days. That's the problem with summer in the Scottish Highlands. It's predictable in its unpredictability. I shared a bit about what I wish people knew about summer in the Scottish Highlands last year, and I think it's a really helpful guide to what can be a time of year with a lot of conflicting information.

June often ends up being a pretty busy month for us, with a lot of friends and family visiting and very few days off. Because of that, my adventures during the month of June end up being a bit closer to home. To be honest, I really enjoy the oppurtunity to discover the places closer to home on a lower budget. I discover walks that I would never find otherwise (some of which I've documented over the years here).

One of my favourite adventures we had in June last year was to Mallaig on a delivery run. Mallaig is at the end of the West Highland train line and it's also where you get the ferry to Skye and the Small Isles. During our visit, we stopped at The West Highland Tea Company's Tea Room as well as to The Bakehouse and enjoyed such a wonderful hour exploring this wee port village.
