What's September Really Like in the Scottish Highlands

For me, September is the most beautiful month to visit the Scottish Highlands. I might be a little bit biased (it is my birthday month after all) but I can't think of a month where the landscape really gets to shine quite like September. You get cooler days, as well as summer's last hoorah. The evenings are starting to get shorter again and you wake up the next morning with a bit of a chill in the air. We are truly on the cusp between summer and autumn.
I shared a blogpost last year about why September is my favourite month in the Scottish Highlands. In essence, my favourite thing about September is the cosiness that comes with this month. I love summer so much, but by the start of September, I'm crazing the cosiness of the more autumnal days. I also love that this time of year feels distinctly pink. My dahlias collection I've been accumulating over the last few years really comes to a head in September, and the pink flowers in my collection really remind me of the soft pink sunsets you see at this time of year. Everything just has such a lovely pink glow at this time of year.
One of my favourite parts of this month is foraging for brambles (or blackberries as they are called elsewhere). Once I discovered these incredible wee fruits and just how delicious they are, I became absolutely hooked. If you visit me at this time of year, you'll often see me heading out the door with a tub to collect the brambles I see, before our freezer inevitably becomes full to bursting with the fruits. Generally, I use the brambles to make jam (my favourite kind) but I have a couple of recipes I'm hoping to make this year to celebrate all things autumn.
One of my favourite adventures we took during September was to Ullapool a few years ago. I love Ullapool, with it's fun shops and real seaside village feel. We returned to Ullapool again recently, but nothing felt more special to me than that first visit to Ullapool. It started off a misty day, with the haar coming off the sea and a real chill in the air. But as the haar burned off, the day ended up being clear and bright with just a slight autumnal chill in the air.
I have a really exciting trip planned for this September that I'll be sharing lots about over the next few months. But just know I'm so excited to share another Island adventure, espeically during my favourite time of year.
