After four months of gloom, darkness and cold, Spring has fully arrived in the Scottish Highlands! At the beginning of March, we start to wake up in light again after months of waking up in darkness. The snowdrops are fully in blown and the first daffodils are starting to come through. Hopefully by the end of the month, we'll start to see the first spring lambs here in the Scottish Highlands!

March is a really interesting month for those of us that live here in the Scottish Highlands. After the winter months when a lot of businesses locally are closed for extended periods, March comes with businesses reopening with more hours again. Amongst my favourite businesses opening this month is Cafe Cuil, the incredible Hebridean brunch spot near Carbost on the Isle of Skye. We've visited Cafe Cuil a number of times at various times of year but it is a fantastic place to visit you're looking for incredible food on the island.

March is also a great month for visiting new places whilst there still aren't too many people around. One of my favourite adventures we took in March 2024 was to the Beinn Eighe National Nature Reserve. It's a place I'd admired from afar the couple of times we've driven through, but never really stopped to consider heading out for a walk here. If you're in Wester Ross and looking to get outside and explore the incredible natural beauty of this part of the Scottish Highlands, this might be the spot for you.

In March 2025, we utilised an overnight stay on the Isle of Skye to explore the north end of Skye. Even though I only live half an hour from the Skye Bridge, the north end of the island is a region I have explored too much. We had brunch that day at the Hungry Gull in Staffin, (which also reopens this month) and it was probably one of my favourite meals I had all year. If you're heading to the north end of Skye, I'd highly recommend checking out the Hungry Gull for all your brunch and lunch needs.
