Camus Daraich Beach, Sleat Peninsula, Isle of Skye, Scottish Highlands

A couple of years ago, I took one of my friends on an adventure to the Point of Sleat. It's been one of my favourite walks in the Highlands to date, and definitely one of my favourite walks we've found on the Isle of Skye.

During that adventure, though, we took a bit of a detour and actually ended up missing a beach at the end of the walk. It was only after we finished the walk that we realised we had missed out on Camus Daraich Beach, a beautiful white sandy beach on the island. So, a few weeks ago at the beginning of February, when a good day feels more like Spring and has to be taken full advantage of, we set out to the Sleat Peninsula to try and find this beach for ourselves.

Since moving to the Highlands, I've fallen in love with all the incredible beaches around the Scottish Highlands. Although Skye has some amazing beaches, there aren't heaps of sandy white beaches on the island. I've heard of this beach on the beautiful Sleat Peninsula for a number of years now, but the walk down to the beach meant we hadn't made the effort to get down.

The walk down to Camus Daraich Beach isn't one for the faint of heart. It took us just over an hour to walk from the carpark at Aird Old Church Gallery down to the beach. There is a clearly marked path, although it is pretty rocky and steep in places. As you head closer towards your destination, the route sends you off to the right over a hill and through some fields to get down to the bay.

The reward for the walk though is the incredible sandy beach at the end. After seeing all the beaches on Skye, this is the first really white sandy beach I've discovered on Skye. Although it was too cold in February to enjoy some time swimming in the sea, I think this would be a fantastic beach to enjoy a wee dip in the sea after the walk down to it. We took time to sit on a rock and enjoy the view for an hour or so, whilst enjoying one of my favourite winter snacks (blood oranges), before heading back along the road.

If you're lucky enough to do this walk as the sun is setting, it's such a beautiful sight to see the mountains of Knoydart and the Small Isles in the distance. Seeing these hills of the mainland and the view of islands in the distance has only ignited more love in me for this incredible part of the world and made me want to continue on in exploring and findining out more about the Highlands and Islands of Scotland.
